Having left my beloved Kenya, here I am in the most beautiful school Lowther Castle in North Wales not far from RHYL which is on the coast.
The Castle was built It was built between 1806 - 1814.
I was 15 years old. My brother was at Marlborough Public School in Wiltshire. We had a Deer Park, two enormous lakes in which we skated on these in the winter, tennis and squash courts and a golf course. We had to play cricket with boys from a prep school eldest 13!
Supposedly a white ghost somewhere! In the Castle she had 3 big black dogs! I had a LION cub when 2 years old in Mombasa.
My saving grace was being very good at all games! Lacrosse, Tennis, Hockey, swimming, Cricket Fencing, and riding.

My parents were in Mombasa, so I was quite lonely, but in the holidays I had my bellowed RHANI.
I used to Hunt in the winter, and show her in the summer holidays. Left school after Matrix and lived with Madam Manley who was my chaperon! (making sure I behaved my self!). Cordon Bleu cooking and shorthand typing! I was a debutante and Presented at Court.

I MUST FLY I MUST FLY I MUST FLY
In a Piper Cub Victor my instructor taught me to fly at Port Reitz Airport, just across the causeway from Mombasa.
After 3 hours I went SOLO. and after 13 hours I got my license, Number 334.
This covered Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika.

THIS was MY BABY for 2 years.
Moggs and I about to take off.
Moggs and I about to take off.
One Sunday I said to Moggs, let's go to Tanga and meet up with friends about 90 miles down the coast. Gave the Control Tower our destination.
On a Piper Club the fuel gauge is outside attached to a CORK on the bonnet. It was sticking right up so full. Decided to fly low over the reef looking for Sharks. PANIC the fuel gauge had disappeared! "I am going to climb so I will have height if I have to land." But no way could I climb! Turning round Moggs had got her heavy handbag over the dual control! Tanga in sight panic! again! At the end of the grass strip a fire blazing! Side slipped down. No one in the Control tower, fire increasing and wind against me! Hello and goodbye! Another time! I adored flying taking my Cocker Spaniel Petticoats with me, landing on remote beaches. Flew to Lamu, no runway a very rough strip opposite the island and then a boat ride across. Two friends also had planes, We would throw out lav paper and see how many times we could cut this with our wings! And with sand bags when weekending at Malindi. The looser bought the drinks! |
Brian a vet would take me to wildly remote farms he was always singing!
I wanted to loop the loop so moved to a Tiger Moth.
The most wonderful freedom with the wind in my hair the world was mine and I felt immortal!
At the right height I would go slowly into the loop (no Petticoats this time!) holding upside down as long I could then back to the beginning. When I took a boy friend never saw them again! Pathetic!
